A Prod With the Zen Stick

The shock came last week, on Tuesday afternoon. On my way to work, I had dropped by the ATM machine at the bank near the store to withdraw some money. The withdrawal failed. The machine claimed that I had no money in my account. Since I knew that there was at least $300 in it, I went to hunt down the mistake.

Email Notification Reductaped

OK, I think I have it working now. Enter your email address in the form near the bottom of the left colum to be informed when I put up new posts.

More human stuff later this evening. Really.

Email Notification

You can now enter your email address on a form somewhere on this page and be informed when new posts appear.

Later: Well, it looks like it isn’t doing the email notification. And after I wrote an extensive message to the forum, including bits of code to show what’s going on, carefully wrapping the code fragments in the right HTML, the message disappeared — apparently the forum software has a bug that destroys messages with properly notated code. So that’s almost four hours wasted on what should be a simple thing.

This whole thing is a damned sargasso — it isn’t turtles all the way down, it’s bugs: roaches pouncing on aphids drooling on mosquitos hovering over … oh, hell, I’m so tired, I can’t even think of a fourth insect.

Doesn’t anybody write code that works anymore?

And here I was going to write a really nice blog post about tonight’s dinner. Too late now, and I’m too angry.

Ah, So It’s Not Just Me…

Apparently the problem with posting to a mailing list was part of a bigger problem. According to this post to Slashdot, there was major cloggage somewhere that backed up messages from gmail addresses to mailing lists hosted at SourceForge.

My mailing list posts haven’t shown up yet, but there’s probably quite a backlog.

By the way, I heard about this on one of my favorite podcasts, Slashdot Review, which is now one of my main sources of information about tech stuff.

Is Google boycotting itself?

(Yeah, that’s somewhat provocatively tongue-in-cheek…)
OK, maybe someone can explain this to me: I’ve been trying to post to a mailing list for the past few days, after a long time during which posting was no problem. It now looks like the mail is getting stuck — and it’s because gmail can’t verify that mail is valid when coming from, er, gmail!

Recent Acquisitions

Logging this before I knock the stack over yet again… I’ve found some good stuff in cheap CD bins over the past few weeks, looking in both the Berkeley and San Francisco Amoebas, Half Price Books in Berkeley, and a few real finds at the Community Thrift Shop on Valencia Street in San Francisco:

Tests (in so many ways…)

This is mostly to try out an external blogging application that I have installed on my Linux laptop. (It’s the same object as the Windows object, just dual-booting into Ubuntu Dapper Linux.)
