Oui, Oui, Je Suis Un Research Geek

I’m pleased to learn today that I have won a fun trivia contest. From the latest Musings newsletter from Discipline Global Mobile, who represent King Crimson and all things related to Robert Fripp:

Our most recent Degrees of Separation contest was to link Robert to Lars Ulrich in as few steps as possible. We chose two winners as they both had unique ways to do so in two steps. Our first winner is a repeat…Joseph Zitt. He discovered that Lars played live with Joe Satriani and Camp Freddy at a 2006 AES Convention. Of course, Robert toured with Joe for G3. Our other winner is Stephan Koesters who discovered that Flea played with Metallica on stage at a benefit in LA in May, 2008, and Flea and Robert played together for the Sidi Mansour album by Cheikha Rimitti. We usually choose one winner from all correct entries, but given the inspired answers both provided, both are entitled to a free Club disc of their choosing… Thank you for entering, and congratulations to Joseph and Stephan.

For those who care, the Ulrich/Satriani/et al video is here. It took about an hour to figure out the connection and to be able to find URLs to document it.

For my King Crimson Collectors Club CD, I picked ProjeKct One -CC – Jazz Cafe Suite, December 1 – 4, 1997. Mmm, crunchy…

The next contest is to connect Fripp with Flavor Flav. I think I’ve found someone who connects with both, though I’ve asked DGM for clarification on a rule. There are lots of three-step links.

The bookseller connection? That would be a stretch, other than that it does show that some of us remain in tenacious discovery mode even off the clock.

Are you going to mount it alongside your autographed Eno album?

*grin* I wish I still had the autographed Eno… but all my LPs have disappeared (in separate incidents in 1993 and 1997). *sigh*

I can get from Flavor Flav to Fripp in two steps. Have they ruled on your one-step?

I have found several ways for the two-step. A couple of Flavor Flav’s guest appearances make that trivial. One maddening thing is that FF has recorded with one person who is a good friend of RF’s, hangs out with him occasionally, and has played on the same bill as him… but I can’t find any reference to anywhere they’ve played together.

No word on the one-step yet. (One possible source of confusion: what I, and, I think, you refer to as a one-step — a single person with whom both have played –is called a two-step by DGM. So I called a three-step in my message what we’re thinking of as a two-step. What they would call a one-step would require the two to be the same person. And I think FF is much shorter and younger than RF, so odds are against that.)
