Silence\r\n\r\nno\r\n\r\nwords spoken\r\n\r\nhere\r\n\r\nwe\r\n\r\nnow\r\n\r\nstand\r\n\r\ntightly joined\r\ntogether\r\n\r\nalone\r\n\r\nthree steps back\r\nthree steps forward\r\nas we approach the ghost of a throne\r\n\r\nfeet held closely together\r\n\r\n\"Oh Lord, open our lips...\"\r\n\r\nFor each blessing\r\nmeticulously written\r\nwe bend our knees and bow\r\nthen stand erect again\r\nand turn and sway\r\n\r\nand as we speak our prayers\r\nin silence\r\nwe listen also\r\nto the whisperings of our hearts\r\n\r\nListen: you may hear\r\n  the turning of pages\r\n  the hum of lights\r\n  the rush of traffic passing outside\r\n  the rustle of moving lips\r\n    as we mouth and savor\r\n    the ancient texts\r\n  the shuffle of feet.\r\n\r\nListen: if you hear these,\r\n  listen more closely.\r\n\r\n(The Presence comes near,\r\n  tentatively,\r\n  as if afraid that her light\r\n  will distract us from\r\n  our focus.\r\n\r\nShe moves among us\r\n  silent\r\n  unseen\r\n\r\nThen, with further joy,\r\n  exchanging power with us\r\n  as the beams of our prayers merge and\r\n  point east\r\n  point upward\r\n  point outward\r\n\r\nShe runs in paths of symbols of infinity\r\n  bowing and swirling among us\r\n  her energies reflecting,\r\n  refracting our movements\r\n  our bows and turns\r\n  tilting, spinning her outward\r\n\r\nuntil\r\nas each of us completes the prayer\r\n  (three steps forward\r\n  three steps back)\r\nshe slows\r\n\r\nthen once again rejoins the silence\r\n  standing,\r\n  waiting to the east)\r\n\r\nWe finish\r\n\r\nand our leader turns,\r\nthen turns back,\r\n\r\nreprising\r\nsaying the prayers again, aloud,\r\n  for those of us who may not have prayed\r\n  for those of us who may not have understood\r\n  for those of us who may not have listened\r\n    to their inner selves\r\n    to their voices of meditation.\r\n\r\nWe stand\r\n\r\nand,\r\nmore relaxed,\r\nmore aligned with the surrounding atmosphere\r\n\r\nlet our minds drift\r\nto the leader\u0092s melodies\r\nas we\r\nand the shielding hall of prayer\r\nbecome one.<\/pre>\n
