CD Packaging

For the initial series of CD-R releases from Metatron Press, we decided to try more environmentally-friendly packaging than the standard jewel box. A series of experiments resulted in a package that could easily be folded into shape from a single 11 by 17 inch piece of paper.

The page is divided into nine panels, three by three. When the center group, which contains the front and back covers, is right-side-up, the top and bottom groups are upside down. Folding those panels so that the top and bottom pages meet, they are once again right-side-up. To complete the package, fold the shorter of the three right-to-left panels in along a line halfway between its text and that of the back cover, then fold the front cover on top of it.

The pages were created in Adobe Framemaker. To complement the antique woodcut motif of the cover animals, a Photoshop filter, followed by additional image editing, converted photographs into a line-drawn look similar to that use for images in the Wall Street Journal. The PDF files were created in a 100 dpi resolution to add to the slightly rough-hewn look.
